Spain has announced a landmark €1.2 billion investment in seven ‘hydrogen valleys’ as part of its broader drive to become a European leader in renewable hydrogen and reach net-zero emissions.
The initiative, backed by Spain’s Recovery and Resilience Plan, will support regional clusters dedicated to producing renewable hydrogen and building out critical infrastructure such as storage systems and renewable electricity generation.
These hydrogen valleys, to be established across Aragon, Andalusia, Castile and León, Catalonia, and Galicia, represent a major step forward in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors, boosting regional economies, and securing energy independence. With a total projected electrolysis capacity of 2.3 GW, the projects are expected to collectively produce around 269,142 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually, according to Quantum Commodity Intelligence.
At the heart of the programme is a competitive bidding process, through which funding is allocated via direct grants to the most viable and impactful projects. One such project, the León Green Hydrogen Valley, stands out with a €179.99 million grant. It will support the development of a 415.2 MW facility aimed at transforming the region into a renewable hydrogen hub.
Another high-profile project, led by RIC Energy, is set to receive €81.4 million for a 220 MW plant. This facility will not only generate green hydrogen but also produce sustainable aviation fuel, addressing the pressing need to decarbonise the aviation sector.
In total, the hydrogen valley initiative is expected to mobilise over €5.8 billion in public and private investment. These projects will catalyse job creation, enhance technological innovation, and lay the groundwork for Spain’s transition to a clean energy economy.
By investing in renewable hydrogen at scale, Spain is making a bold statement: that green energy is not only an environmental imperative but also an economic opportunity. With its geographical advantages and political will, the country is well-positioned to become a major hydrogen exporter to the rest of Europe in the years ahead.
As Europe races to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and accelerate the energy transition, Spain’s hydrogen valleys are more than regional projects – they are a national mission with continental significance.
