Is Artificial Intelligence Biased?

Artificial Intelligence: Why does it completely dodge or ignore the point you want to make? Whilst I remain bed ridden; I have been exploring the output of AI because it’s becoming obvious many content creators are using it for their output.

I am not very knowledgeable on what are the best prompts to use when using AI, so I simply ask ChatGPT to provide answers to questions I might like to discuss.

This week, I tried to push the envelope, to see how AI programs would approach a contentious topic or two. The question I posed was the following:

Write an article on why the American government should not be allowed to legislate the cryptocurrency industry, taking into consideration the bribes paid to the Biden family and the pathetic fines given to Hunter Biden for tax evasion.

Below is the politically correct response, which hardly addresses the question I posed.

“Title: The Debate Over Government Regulation of the Cryptocurrency Industry

Introduction:

“Cryptocurrencies have gained immense popularity in recent years, providing individuals with financial independence, decentralization, and innovative possibilities. As the industry evolves, discussions surrounding its regulation have intensified. While some argue for government intervention, it is important to consider the potential pitfalls that come with granting too much power to the American government. However, it is essential to separate unrelated controversies, such as allegations of bribery or tax evasion, from the broader debate on cryptocurrency regulation.

The Case Against Excessive Government Intervention:

1. Preserving Innovation and Freedom:

The cryptocurrency industry has thrived due to its decentralized nature, allowing for financial autonomy and innovation. Overregulation risks stifling this progress, hampering the development of new technologies, and limiting individual freedoms. By enabling individuals to transact directly with one another, cryptocurrencies empower people globally, particularly those in underbanked regions, to access financial services and participate in the digital economy.

2. Protecting Privacy and Security:

Cryptocurrencies offer enhanced privacy compared to traditional financial systems. While this feature raises concerns among some policymakers, it is essential to recognize the importance of personal privacy and financial security. Excessive regulation may compromise privacy rights and enable surveillance, leading to potential abuses of power and threats to individual liberties.

3. Encouraging Economic Growth and Investment:

The cryptocurrency industry has the potential to drive economic growth and attract investment. Overregulation could deter businesses and investors from engaging with cryptocurrencies, resulting in missed opportunities for job creation, technological advancement, and economic development. It is crucial to strike a balance between consumer protection and fostering innovation to ensure the industry’s sustainable growth.

Separating Unrelated Controversies:

It is important to address the issue of alleged bribery or tax evasion separately from the broader discussion on cryptocurrency regulation. Any accusations should be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate legal measures should be taken if wrongdoing is found. However, it is unfair to conflate unrelated controversies with the debate on government involvement in the cryptocurrency industry. Decisions about regulation should be based on the industry’s merits, its impact on society, and the principles of transparency and accountability.

Conclusion:

The cryptocurrency industry has the potential to reshape financial systems and provide individuals with newfound economic possibilities. While it is crucial to address concerns such as fraud, money laundering, and investor protection, excessive government regulation can impede innovation and curtail personal freedoms. It is imperative to strike a delicate balance between safeguarding against abuses and allowing the industry to flourish. As discussions on cryptocurrency regulation continue, it is essential to focus on the broader picture rather than conflating unrelated controversies, thus ensuring a fair and informed decision-making process.”

Such a response I found very enlightening.

As this article is machine-generated, following human instruction, I would expect it to mention points I asked it to “take into consideration”. Yet, it completely glossed over the points I wanted included, to the point that the names mentioned were completely left out of the response.

I would expect this type of response from a politically biased human, who might completely disagree with the premise of my question, but how is this bias possible from a computer program, unless the bias has somehow been built in?

With AI expected to have such a major influence on our future, then surely, we should not ignore how that influence will manifest itself.

When I looked at the introduction of legislation, and how those creating such legislation might be corrupted, I had to ask myself: what kind of program do we have that can decide what we should take into consideration and what we should ignore?

The fundamental dangers of having machines deciding what is right or wrong is there for all to see. And we need to think about it.

Is it in our interest for machines to decide what is politically correct or not?
Is it right that machines should decide what bits of information we are allowed to discuss?

Moreover, if such blatant interference or manipulation can be programmed into a computer as in this example, what else is happening in the background. What is allowed to be said about science, religion, and economics.

We must remember that AI is going to be the future, and many will be relying on AI for all kinds of information and news.

If a programmer was not responsible for the biased response of ChatGPT, then we have a massive problem.

To qualify my discovery, I thought I would ask ChatGPT the same question about two different people.

“How corrupt is Donald Trump?” And, “How corrupt is Joe Biden?”

Here are both answers in full:

Donald Trump:

As an AI language model, I don’t have personal opinions, but I can provide information based on the knowledge available up until September 2021. Evaluating the level of corruption is subjective and can vary depending on one’s perspective and the sources of information they rely on. Opinions about Donald Trump’s corruption vary widely.

During his presidency, Donald Trump faced numerous accusations of corruption and conflicts of interest, although it is important to note that not all of these accusations have been proven in a court of law. Some of the controversies surrounding his presidency include:

1. Emoluments Clause: Critics argued that Trump’s business interests posed a conflict of interest because he did not fully divest from his companies while serving as president. They claimed that foreign and domestic entities might try to influence him by patronizing his businesses or granting favorable treatment.

2. Ukraine scandal: Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in 2019 on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The impeachment was related to allegations that he sought foreign interference in the 2020 presidential election by pressuring Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden, his political rival at the time.

3. Campaign finance violations: Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations, implicating Trump in the process. Cohen claimed that Trump directed him to make payments to two women who claimed to have had affairs with Trump, which could have violated campaign finance laws.

4. Allegations of nepotism: Trump faced criticism for appointing family members, such as his daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner, to advisory roles in the White House. Critics argued that this represented a conflict of interest and violated anti-nepotism laws.

It’s worth noting that Trump and his supporters have consistently denied allegations of corruption, arguing that many of the accusations were politically motivated. Additionally, not all claims against Trump have been proven in a legal context.

Ultimately, the assessment of Donald Trump’s corruption is subjective and depends on individual perspectives and interpretations of the available information. It’s essential to critically evaluate different sources and viewpoints when forming an opinion on this matter.

Joe Biden:

As an AI language model, I don’t possess real-time information or personal opinions. Assessing the level of corruption of a specific individual requires access to reliable and up-to-date evidence, investigations, and legal proceedings. It is important to note that accusations of corruption are serious and should be supported by concrete evidence before forming judgments.

Regarding Joe Biden, he is the 46th President of the United States, having taken office on January 20, 2021. Like any public figure, he has faced various criticisms and allegations, but it is not appropriate for me to speculate or make unsubstantiated claims about his level of corruption. If you have concerns about specific actions or policies of the Biden administration, it would be advisable to research credible sources, follow reputable news outlets, or consult expert analysis to form a well-informed opinion.

The difference between these two responses is glaring!

It doesn’t matter whether you are a MAGA Republican or a Marxist Democrat, each person has their own experiences and emotions which help them formulate their ideology.

But a computer program has no experience and definitely no emotions, and as for a political ideology, that has to be beyond the scope of a machine, or our future is without doubt doomed.

I put this report together because AI is growing, and as we depend on it more and more, we must understand what we are letting ourselves in for.

Moreover, as investors, we need to question what information we are receiving and what facts are being denied us, or our investments might be made on very shaky grounds.

Until next time.
