Hyundai Nexo FCEV Sells Nearly 7,000 Since June Launch

by | Sep 2, 2025

Hyundai Motor Company has announced that the new-generation NEXO fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV), launched in April 2025, is rapidly gaining traction, with nearly 7,000 units sold since its public debut. This strong early performance highlights growing consumer interest in hydrogen-powered mobility as the world shifts towards zero-emission transportation.

Current and Past Sales of Hyundai’s Hydrogen Vehicles by Country

The NEXO has been Hyundai’s flagship FCEV since its introduction in 2018. According to recent data:

  • Global cumulative sales in recent years include:
    • 2018: 949 units
    • 2019: 4,987 units
    • 2020: 6,781 units
    • 2021: 9,602 units
    • 2022: 10,527 units
    • 2023: 4,552 units
    • 2024: 2,774 units. Source Wikipedia.

While South Korea has consistently led NEXO sales, interest in the US and Europe remains relatively modest, though early attention to the new second-generation model hints at potential renewed momentum.

Growth Expectations and Emerging Markets

Hyundai anticipates several key markets will drive future growth:

  • South Korea continues to be the largest volume market, where public and private investment in hydrogen infrastructure remains strong.
  • Europe and the USA, though low in early sales, are expected to grow as refuelling infrastructure expands and consumers become more aware of FCEVs as a viable clean-energy alternative.
  • Additional markets include Switzerland, where Hyundai launched the world’s first production hydrogen-fuelled truck, the XCIENT Fuel Cell, under the joint venture Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility (HHM).

Hyundai’s strategy includes deploying hydrogen-powered trucks and buses, such as the XCIENT Fuel Cell (with a range of approximatly. 400 km) and the Elec City FCEV city bus (range  around 434 km), to demonstrate FCEV versatility and stimulate wider industry adoption.

Hyundai’s Actions to Support Hydrogen Infrastructure in Key Markets

To support this expected growth, Hyundai is actively involved in infrastructure development:

  • In Switzerland, Hyundai and its partner H2 Energy have formed Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility, partnering with Hydrospider (Alpiq, Linde, H2 Energy) to develop hydrogen production and refuelling infrastructure for heavy trucks.
  • In Europe overall, Hyundai claims that over 70 per cent of all fuel-cell cars on Europe’s roads are Hyundai vehicles, indicating its market leadership in building both product availability and infrastructure acceptance.

Across global markets, Hyundai continues to champion hydrogen mobility through its HTWO brand and “Hydrogen for Humanity” vision, as demonstrated by the launch of the all-new NEXO and its advanced fuel-cell technology.

Details Hyundai’s hydrogen history, global sales, UK-specific insights, and collaboration in hydrogen infrastructure development:

In Brief

  • The new-generation Hyundai NEXO FCEV has achieved nearly 7,000 sales since its launch in April 2025, underlining rising market confidence.
  • Historically, South Korea leads by volume, with growing but still modest uptake in the USA and Europe.
  • Expectation of growth hinges on expanding infrastructure, especially in regions like Europe, the US, and specific markets such as Switzerland.
  • Hyundai is actively supporting this via partnerships (e.g. HHM, Hydrospider), technology initiatives under the HTWO brand, and reinforcing its leadership in FCEV availability.
